NEW ORLEANS, Lousiana (KBTX) – A GoFundMe is rapidly growing for the husband of Jacob Carter, a beloved bagel shop owner from Washington State who was gunned down during a visit to New Orleans.

Friends remember Carter as a beacon of positivity. Carter was reportedly shot to death while on vacation in New Orleans with his husband Daniel.

Friends close to the family tell News 3′s Rusty Surette that Carter had ties to the Bryan-College Station area and his family owns Madisonville-based Carter Enterprises, a business that operates several fast food spots in the region.

“It’s really sad knowing that one of the brightest lights in this community is gone,” said Tone Kremer.

Kremer said the Tacoma, Washington area supported Carter and his husband’s business, Howdy Bagels, because of their kindness.

“What they brought to the community in general, everyone came for really great food but even better interaction,” Kremer said. “They were just so bright, positive and happy.”

Kremer said a memorial is growing outside of the bagel shop and a GoFundMe set to cover the shop’s rent, employee wages and other expenses has nearly quadrupled its goal of $50,000.

“To see how much everyone is rallying together behind all of this is such a beautiful moment,” Kremer said. “Jake, Dan and the crew have touched so many lives. This is going to hit us for a minute.”

Carter was walking with his husband when the shooting happened during what sources said appears to be an attempted armed robbery.

The NOPD has not released details on any potential suspects or arrests.

According to an Instagram post from the Howdy Bagel account, a store that Carter and his husband opened recently, Jake Carter was someone who “exuded kindness, warmth, and genuine care to everyone he met.”

“Jake was one of the brightest spots in the lives of everyone he loved,” the post reads. “This loss is immeasurable for our community.”

The post says the bagel shop has temporarily closed, and links to a GoFundMe opened to support shop employees who have been impacted.
