2 BCS men serve as umpires for Savannah Bananas game

HOUSTON, Texas (KBTX) – Two local Savannah Bananas fans got to do something pretty cool this weekend. The Savannah Bananas are an exhibition baseball team based in Savannah, Georgia. They’ve gained popularity on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

Ron Crozier and James Meyer were two of the umpires at the game in Houston.

Crozier says he’s a big fan of the Bananas. He knows one of the coaches for the bananas who used to coach for the Brazos Valley Bombers.

When the team found out they were playing at Minute Maid Park, they knew they needed more umpires since the field is larger. They called Ron and James to do the job.

“There were 42,000 people there Saturday night and it fired up the guy’s playing probably more than anybody else they put on a show,” Crozier said. “I’m a huge fan of the Bananas, have been since I first heard about them. I have seen highlights of them, seen videos of them, I didn’t know until I got there that the umpires also had a part in this thing. There were choreographed opportunities where we actually had to do some dance numbers.”

Crozier says the umpires also had to do things like sign autographs.

“Who wants an autograph from an umpire?” Crozier joked. “But they did! I mean these people were nuts about Banana baseball.”

He says it was a night of entertainment with a little bit of baseball.
